Solving Complex Issues with Innovative Mobile Applications (Case Studies)

As a user experience design company, everyday we collaborate with our clients to develop products and applications that solve many a challenges with innovative yet simple solutions.

In this blog I share couple of case studies of mobile applications that helped our clients resolve their complex challenges and helped them leverage the benefits from the robust solutions.

Catalog Application

A mobile application that plugged many a gaps

Scenario:

India’s garment manufacturing hub Surat has over 10,000 saree manufacturing units. Due to this cut throat competition maintaining secrecy over the latest designs is a major issue. Normally the practice followed by most of manufacturer is like this –

  1. Highly paid garment designers designs the saree keeping latest fashion trends in mind
  2. Post production photo-shoot happens and catalogs get ready
  3. These catalogs are sent to the prospective clients who would review and send their order

Challenge:

Design theft is a major concern here. Since after production the photoshoot and catalog printing happens the designs get leaked and copied by the competitors instantly. So by the time the catalog reaches to the potential customers the same designs get manufactured by the other manufacturers that decrease the design value and result in financial loss.

Solution:

After discussing with our client, understanding the challenge and preparing an elaborated report on the habits and tech savviness of end customers – we proposed to develop an Android based protected application that would replace the physical catalogs.

So, the client would not print the physical catalogs of the latest designs and distribute the same, but would instead upload the digital format of the catalog (the images) using a protected backend web app that would link to the user side mobile application.

The application can be downloaded from the Play Store but cannot be used without the passcode provided by the developers. This passcodes expires frequently and new passcodes sent to the users via SMS.

With this solution, our client could protect the designs from infringement by the middlemen and could plug the inhouse leakage too. Apart from this, this application also enabled client to share the latest designs instantly with their customers, have their feedback and online enquiries too.

Outcome:

The infringement still happens and designs get copied too. But since the actual designs reaches to client as soon as it get ready, the client get the order fast and could deliver to them before same designs get copied.

Apart from this, the end customers also gets additional benefits like bookmarking the favorite designs and order online. This have speed up the entire process.

Rent Collection Application

Eliminating the frauds and corruption

Challenge:

One of our reputed client who have rented a good number of properties faced a challenge which was causing a huge financial loss. Since over hundred flats and shops are rented, he hired people as in-house collection agent who would collect the rent every day and submit the same to the admin office every evening before calling off the day.

The employees indulged in malpractice where they would either not deposit the entire amount collected and adjust the same next month or they do not adjust at all. Due to lack of paperwork most of the time this malpractice would go unnoticed resulting in huge financial loss.

Solution:

After analyzing the entire scenario and realizing that online collection of payment is not possible and there is no way we can eliminate the collection agent system, we came up with a unique solution.

We developed a mobile application for the collection agents and a supporting backend system which would installed at the back office.

Every collection agent was provided with mobile phone preloaded with the application. This application had the list of tenants from whom the rent should be collected. The details include – the exact amount due, any previous due, due date, tenant name and address etc. When the sourcing agent would visit the tenant and mark the same on application, an SMS would go to the tenant’s mobile phone with the name of agent, amount due and confirmation code. The tenant would pay the money as cash and would enter the code on mobile. As soon as this is done, it would get registered to the back office. This real time update empowered the back office team with useful data like, how much money collected from which tenant, which agent has what amount at the end of the day and who has not yet paid the rent.

This system eliminated the non disclosure of rent collected and a wide spread corruption.

DrSaab Appointment Application

Helping villagers to prevent harassment

Challenge:

Villagers of small villages and towns in Rajasthan, India have to travel to nearby cities to consult doctors for their dieces. Most of time people from remote villages travel in a crowded bus for long hours to reach the large towns and cities. Since there is no way they could know if doctor is available before reaching to the clinic, many a time they have to wait for a long period of time and worst they may have to return to their home without getting examined.

Solution:

To overcome the situation we developed an online system that would empower the villagers to book an appointment with doctors at their preferred time. This way they would know if the doctor is available and what time is good for them to visit. On the other hand doctors also get facility to provide the time as per their availability and also get real time update of upcoming appointments.

Keeping the demography in mind the application is built with simplistic layout and minimal registration and navigation flow. Moreover, using one application a user could book appointment for up to 4 different people which effectively covers a family.

Not just that, we added couple of more features like medicine reminder, medical store locator and medical record storing system that will help users residing in small villages to a great extend.
